This section provides a conceptual overview of RegionMatch. It explains what similarity means, which aspects are compared, and how results should be interpreted – without going into technical or mathematical details.

What does β€œsimilarity” mean in RegionMatch?

In RegionMatch, similarity describes how closely regions resemble each other across a set of selected indicators. It does not mean that two regions are identical.

Instead, regions are considered similar if they share comparable characteristics across several aspects, including:

  • climate conditions

  • sociodemographic structures

  • orography

  • land use composition

By deliberately combining these four complementary aspects – climate, sociodemography, orography, and land use – RegionMatch goes beyond climate-only comparisons.

The core idea is simple: Regions with similar structural and environmental conditions often face similar challenges. Comparing such regions therefore provides a solid basis for learning from each other and identifying transferable adaptation measures.

From similarity to practical insight

RegionMatch is designed to support practical decision-making, not just analysis. Users can explicitly choose how many similar regions (N) they want to explore. For each region, RegionMatch provides links to implemented adaptation measures.

This enables users to:

  • explore how comparable regions address similar challenges

  • identify potentially transferable strategies

  • move directly from comparison to concrete examples

How to interpret similarity scores

Similarity scores in RegionMatch are relative and depend on the chosen configuration:

  • higher scores indicate greater similarity to the reference region

  • scores are only comparable within the same weighting setup

  • results reflect structural resemblance, not performance or risk levels

What RegionMatch does not do

To avoid misunderstandings, RegionMatch:

  • does not predict future impacts or risks

  • does not rank regions by performance or vulnerability

  • does not replace detailed local assessments

Similarity scores should be understood as relative indicators, not absolute judgments.
